You MUST write a letter of thank you or note after a job interview. Let me say that again, you MUST write a letter of thank you. You may have a great interview but if you don't properly follow up you can quickly lose a lot of points with the interviewer and ultimately lose the position you interviewed for.
As a former Hiring Manager I have actually been in the position where I was torn between two candidates for the same opportunity. Both had great experience on their resumes, impeccable references, and nailed the interview. Guess who I hired? I hired the candidate that sent me a letter of thank you. That is an absolutely true story and the same situation has occurred multiple times during my career.
You should plan on sending out a thank you letter with in 24 hours. An email is acceptable. I recommend an old fashioned letter in the mail, it gives a personal touch that may help differentiate you from the other candidates interviewing for the position and also sending thank you letters. Remember to be direct and to the point. Always type your thank you letter .
Below are three examples of thank you letters, Use these thank you letter formats but remember to personalize the content.

Stanley Brown
Vice President
ABC Company
1234 Road Road
Town, TW 11756
Dear Mr. Brown,
Thank you for sharing your valuable time during my visit to your company last week. I was very impressed with your facilities and the obvious commitment to keep ABC ahead of the competition.
On a professional level, I am excited about the opportunity, aggressiveness and technical excellence so evident at ABC. Your need for a regional sales manager who can penetrate new business markets seems to closely match my background and proven areas of strength.
During our interview, we discussed my most recent employer, CDE . I agree that the situation I described seems strange; however, it is quite true (though counter to the goals of a thriving business). To clarify any questions you may have on this matter I urge you to call Sam Mac, Product Development Manager at CDE (telephone 413-444-6666); he will be glad to answer your questions and verify my description of the situation.
Thank you for promoting such a friendly and relaxed environment during my job interview. It was a pleasure to meet you and the other professionals at ABC. I look forward to continuing our dialogue regarding the open position.
Sincerely,

Dear Ms. Boyd,
Thank you for taking the time to speak with me last week about the open employment position. I was very impressed with what I learned about your organization and remain extremely interested in the opportunity.
In particular, I was pleased to learn during the interview that A Company Inc. is investing resources in building an organization to serve the increasingly important national accounts market along with developing a program focused on managed healthcare services. These value-added programs can be a worthy negotiating tool and competitive advantage in closing business important to the continued growth of your organization.
It seems that my back ground and expertise are a good match for your needs at this time. I look forward to continuing this dialogue.
Sincerely,
