Reference List Example

Home > Employment Resource Centre > After Interview Follow Up > Reference List Example

You do not include references within your resume. You are going to want to develop a separate list of four to seven professional references using a style that matches the style you used for your resume. You want to have that reference list ready to hand to an interviewer if they ask for it during the interview.

References are what will get you the job. If an employer is asking for a copy of your references that is an extremely good sign. It is important the your reference list shows the contact name and information of your reference clearly and that it is all up to date. If a potential employer calls a phone number of a reference and it is disconnected, that could really hurt your chances of getting the job.

Below is a very basic reference list example. As you can see in this reference list example I just use the name of the reference, the position they held when we worked together and contact phone number. You can also include years known and email address. Some people even include a short description of how they interacted with their reference when they worked together. But for the sake of giving a good reference list example I kept it simple.

Reference List Example

Robert Grasso

  • Jimmy Flowers VP of Financial Services Laser Concepts (607) 210-0836

  • Bill Ponan Director of Operations Services International (832) 909-1662

  • Phil Antoratos Sales Representative APY Solutions (981) 999-4355

  • Charles Fitzgerald General Manager and COO APY Solutions (981) 868-1688

Even though this is a very brief and simple example of a reference list, any employer would find this acceptable.
