Most people find new jobs through networking. Does that mean it is a complete waste of time to pursue any other activities? Of course not. There is no perfect one way for finding the best job for you during your career. During your job search it's best to use as many different strategies as possible
It is important during your job search to spend most of your time speaking with real people. That is ultimately what networking means, talking to people, sharing your career goals, asking for their assistance, and seeking advice.
Networking doesn't always mean a business setting, it can be a conversation at a baseball game, a chat with your neighbor, or a comment to your barber. The great and interesting thing about networking is that you never who other people know and are related to. |

When making networking connection be specific in regards to what that person that you are networking with during you job search can help you with. Saying, " I'm looking for a job; do you know any?" will usually result in a negative reply and an end to the conversation. Instead, spend some time telling your networking contact about yourself and what you are looking for. Simply ask for job search advice, suggestions and referrals.
Getting feedback on your resume ca be a great way to start networking. A student of mine used this approach countless times to speak with people she barely knew. Most people were happy to give advice on how to improve her resume. She did this for a few months and always made a point to be very grateful for the resume advice and acted extremely professional. She never actually changed a word on her resume but was building up a network of people who knew her qualifications and professionalism. This networking tactic resulted in multiple job search leads and job interviews.
Networking should be a central component of every job search. To network you need to make connections, talk to people and pursue leads. If you feel uncertain about how to network, what to ask and how to develop job search leads from your contacts, visit a local library or bookstore for one of the many books dedicated to the subject. Learn the skill and process of networking and you'll land your dream job.
