Starting your very own business from scratch can have a lot of advantages. Some being not having to answer to anyone but yourself, you have full control over all decisions and your success is your own. But there are many disadvantages of starting a legitimate home based business from scratch. Here are a few.

On disadvantage is that you have very limited resources. Since you are doing this all on your own you do not have investors or other people to delegate to. The term “resources” doesn’t refer only to money. Resources are also material and most importantly time among other things. There is only 24 hours in a day. Since there is just you, if you can’t handle it either financially or physically, it can’t be handled. As someone who started their own business from scratch this is what I found to be my biggest hurdle. For many years I made money but did not grow because I was doing everything. When you are trying to do everything, how good can you really be at one thing?

You can read all the books you want but when you are starting from scratch on your own you are definitely at the beginning of the learning curve. Unlike when you join an organization, business opportunity or franchise there were people ahead of you that took the lumps before you. Hence there is a knowledge base within the organization of the best way to approach things in your particular industry. When you are working 100 percent on your own you do not have that knowledge base or support system.

Your success is your own but so is your failure. What draws many people to want to work completely for themselves is “freedom”. But that means that the only person that can make sure you are doing what you need to do is you. The reality is most people can’t manage themselves. If given the opportunity to do something they want to do versus getting work done most will pick fun. That is why most people work for someone.

You are the business. If you get sick for a week, the business is closed for a week and no work is getting done. This probably means no money is coming in also. If your car breaks down, your computer crashes or your house burns down, what is your backup? When you are starting your own legitimate home based business from scratch the margin of error is very small. If something happens that takes you out of the game, it’s over.

I have worked for myself many years and it is the best thing I have ever done. But it is not the best thing for everyone. Before doing anything you should take the time and fully review all the pros and the cons of your decision.
