How do you follow up after the Thank You letter?

Home > Employment Resource Centre > After Interview Follow Up > Follow Up After the Thank You Letter

You got called in for an interview and it went great. You then got called in for a second interview and it went even better. They checked your references. You sent a thank you letter to everyone you met with. At the end of your third interview the Vice President of the company he stated he would really like to have you as a team member and they will be contacting you shortly. It has been over a week and you have heard nothing. Now what do you do?

I put together this after thank you letter section because this is very common and I can say has happened to me. Everything seemed in the bag. What is the best way to follow up with out seeming desperate or pushy?

There are two things to that you need to remember in situations like this. The first is that the world does not revolve around you. Some times situations within in companies change over night. Maybe they where told because of budgetary reasons that they can’t bring on another person. Maybe the recruiter was in a terrible accident and is in the hospital. Secondly maybe they changed their mind. It can and does happen. For what ever reason after the thank you letter they decided they weren’t that into you.

In this situational you need to do some professional follow up. The first being a quick note via email. Hopefully you collected everyone that you met with contact information. This email should only be a couple of lines. You do not want to seem desperate our pushy. I would just right something like this.

Hi John Doe,

I hope everything is going well. My name is Steve Smith and I met with you and Jill Taylor regarding the sales position you are currently filling. I want to touch base with you briefly to see if I am still in the running for this position? Any feed back would be greatly appreciated.

Feel free to contact me via email at steve@email.com or phone (602) 333-5555.

Sincerely,

Steve Smith

I like using email as the first pass because people are usually a lot more forthcoming in giving honest feed back. If you do not receive a response I would then make a phone call and state what you did in your email.

The reality is if you do not hear back from them in response to your email and voicemail in a few days it is time to move on. If they still had interest they would have responded in some form.
